What we do - Current Projects

Initially for a few years, we have decided to operate in partnership model by supporting and expanding the operation of a few good organizations, which are already carrying out activities in line with our vision. With our financial and technical support, we wish to expand the operations to reach out to more kids.

We are currently supporting the following initiatives in the state of West Bengal, India

1) Supporting an orphanage in Purokonda village, P.S. - Barjora, District-Bankura (www.pafngo.org). We are sponsoring part of the food expenses and salary of a full-time residential tutor for over 40 kids. This initiative has been started since July, 2008.

Tapassya contributes around Rs. 108,000 per year.

We have also built a concrete building for the girl students at an expense of Rs 1,75,000 in 2008. Prior to this building the little girls had to stay in a mud house with tin roof, which used to be flown away on many a stormy night.

2) Sponsoring 3-days-a-week dinner for around 25 slum children in a temple in Tollygaunj, Kolkata. This initiative, started in 2008 by three of our current members of Tapassya, has been taken over by Tapassya, with the focus to encourage/support them in education also.

Tapassya contributes around Rs. 60,000 per year.

3) Initiation to Execution and Sponsoring (Partial) the Operational Expenses of Ananda Ashram, inside Karunamoyee Kali temple complex. In Ananda Ashram, 10 kids are being brought up in a residential setup. The members of Tapassya were involved from the conceptualization phase of this project, which evolved from sponsoring food for the slum kids, when some of those kids expressed their desire to study. Hence members of Tapassya along with Karunamoye Kali temple trust and some others initiated this project. Starting with 3 kids, it has now grown to 10 kids and we plan to increase the count further with additional infrastructure in next year.

Tapassya contributes around Rs. 1,08,000 per year.

The second phase of this initiative has been initiated to house 15 more kids. Another building is required to be built for this.

4) A Day Care centre for poor village students in Joynagar. Currently 10 students are provided breakfast, lunch and taught (outside school hours) by Hatpara Vivek Seva Niketan, along with the support from Tapassya. Soon we plan to make this fully residential with more kids and professional tutors, to impart quality education to the poor kids, who otherwise may become child labourers.

Tapassya contributes around Rs. 84,000 per year on this.

5) Scholarship and support to poor and needy students in pursuing higher studies. Tapassya has started funding poor students (from 2011), who cannot continue higher studies due to lack of financial support.
On request from Tapassya, Sw. Vivekananda Institute of Science and Technology, West Bengal has waived off the entire tuition fees of the following two students, and Tapassya, is bearing all other expense like hostel, food, books etc. These expenses come to approximately Rs. 30000 per student per year which Tapassya will be bearing. Tapassya members will monitor the students’ progress on regular basis. We intend to add more students into our scholarship scheme every year.

  • Asim Maity: passed out HS with 80% marks this year. His father had abandoned them, when he was 1 year old and his mother is a maid servant. For last 2 years, our Tapassya member, Nirmalya was sponsoring his Higher Secondary education. He is studying Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (first year).
  • Narottam Das Adhikary: Belongs to BPL (Below Poverty Line). Scored around 75% marks in Madhyamik and then passed out HS with 59% marks this year. Could not afford any tuition in HS.  He is studying BBA (first year).

6) Scholarship to two girl students in pursuing Higher Secondary studies. Tapassya has started funding two poor girl students (from Sep, 2011), in continuing their Higher Secondary Studies. Scholarship amount of Rs 2000 per month is being provided to Ms Suparna Das (studying at Binodini Girls’ High School) and Rs 1000 per month provided to Ms Gita Gupta (studying at Ranaghat) to support their private tuition fees and stationary expenses.

All the above initiatives are being solely supported through the voluntary contributions in the form of yearly donation made by the members of Tapassya.
